Visual Arts Educator

About
Me
My name is Alexa Cavanaugh, I am currently pursuing a Masters of Art in Teaching degree, in Visual Arts Education. I graduated from Wayne State in December 2017 with my BFA with concentrations in graphic design and printmaking. Art and art education have always played pivotal roles in my life, and my art teachers were critical in inspiring and guiding me to where I am today. After receiving my BFA I decided to go back to school and become a teacher myself.
I believe that art class helps to create a well rounded education for all students. Art class helps students think creatively, problem solve, work collaboratively, and make decisions. I believe that all students have something to bring to the art classroom, and it is my job to help them reach their creative potential. I do this by differentiating instruction, providing explicit directions and demonstrations, and creating positive relationships with my students.
My main goal for being a teacher is to create a welcoming environment where students are encouraged to experiment and try new things. I want all students to find something that they enjoy working on so they can let loose and express themselves fully. The art classroom should be a sanctuary and a safe space where I can guide students to do their best and take control over their own learning
